A cross value chain platform for collaboration and innovation in compostable materials, technologies and processes, aiming to ensure compostable materials are recycled at scale in Europe.

who-we-are

Our goal: Ensure compostable materials are accepted for organic recycling at scale in Europe.

We believe these materials can boost the organic recycling of biowaste and increase the quantity and quality of the compost produced.

To get there, we need to collaborate across the value chain to improve the circularity of materials that are contaminated with food waste or likely to be disposed with an organic waste stream, and to establish pathways for those materials to be processed by the right technology provider and infrastructure.

about
Who we are

A platform for collaboration

Who we are

The Compostable by Design Platform (CbDP) brings together leaders from all segments of the compostable materials value chain.

From resin producers to film and paper producers, packaging converters, brands and retailers, logistics providers, organic waste management and treatment providers, certification bodies and testing labs, academic institutions and beyond. Collaboration is at our core.

Inclusive innovation

Sharing breakthroughs, experience, guidelines and technology is essential for progress and innovation. By establishing open channels of constructive communication and welcoming opportunities for collaboration in a pre-competitive working environment, we can:

  • Optimise collection and recycling systems for compostable materials
  • Build transparency and traceability across organic recycling supply chains

what-we-do
What we do

Delivering change for a circular future

What we do

The Compostable by Design Platform (CbDP) will build a robust scientific and technical evidence base to inform and engage consumers, industry and policy makers in constructive discussion to implement circular pathways for compostable materials.

We have identified five key deliverables that are essential to achieving our goals.

  • Harmonized compostability (disintegration) evaluation protocol
  • Design guidelines for compostable packaging and other products
  • Guidelines for improved disposal, collection, and organics recycling
  • Guidelines for clear communication and implementation
  • Guideline for labelling and claims

These have been translated into four key workstreams for the first two years of the platform:

WS1: Compostability evaluation protocol

Create a harmonized test method to evaluate compostability and in particular disintegration of compostable materials via existing technologies in Europe

WS2: Compostability design guidelines

Create design guidelines for compostable packaging and other products

WS3: Collection & recycling guidelines

Develop guidelines for improved disposal, collection, and organics recycling taking into account the existing and future organic treatment infrastructure in Europe

WS4: Innovation

Explore the development of technologies and processes to increase the sorting and recycling (acceptance) of compostable materials
